What are Plasma Proteins- Definition & Functions

PLASMA PROTEINS



The proteins in the plasma are:
  • Serum albumin 
  • Serum globulin and 
  • Fibrinogen. 
When the blood is shed out of the blood vessel or collected in a container, the coagulation occurs. In this process, the fibrinogen is converted into fibrin and the blood cells are attached to this fibrin forming the blood clot .After about 45 minutes, a straw coloured fluid oozes out of the blood clot. This fluid is called serum. The serum is different from plasma in its protein content. The serum contains only the albumin and globulin. The fibrinogen is absent in serum because, it is converted into fibrin during the coagulation of the blood. Serum contains all the other constituents of plasma except fibrinogen.

Thus, the Serum = Plasma - Fibrinogen. Because of this, the albumin and globulin are usually called serum albumin and serum globulin.

NORMAL VALUES

The normal values of the plasma proteins are:

Total proteins : 7.3 gm% (6.4 to 8.3 gm %)

Serum albumin : 4.7 gm%

Serum globulin : 2.3 grn%

Fibrinogen : 0.3 gm%
