VITAMIN E:

It has become one of the most misused, abused and controversial nutrients because of many erroneous claims for its healing powers in a variety of ailments. 

Discovery:

In 1922 a research team discovered that female rats aborted and male rats were sterile unless lettuce, wheat germ, and dried alfalfa were added to their diet of casein, cornstarch, lard butter, and yeast. In 1924 another researcher came to the same conclusion, and because the then four known vitamins were called A, B, C and D he suggested that this “fertility vitamin” be called vitamin E. In 1936 the first group isolated an alcohol having vitamin E activity from wheat germ oil and called it alphatocopherol from the Greek words meaning childbirth and to carry, that is, an alcohol that helps the bearing of young.

Recommended dietary allowance:

There is doubt that man requires tocopherol in his diet. The current concept of vitamin E requirement is about 0.8 mg/g of essential fatty acids.

Rich Food Sources:
  • Vitamin E has been isolated from seed oils that are present in large amounts in the germ portion of cereals (e.g., wheat germ oil).
  • It is also found in soybean, safflower, cottonseed, corn, and peanut oils.
  • Plants with dark green leaves, meat, milk, eggs, and fish and fish liver oils are additional sources.
  • Other good sources of the vitamin are wholegrain breads and cereals, wheat germ, liver, nuts and butter.
Absorption and metabolism:

Vitamin E also absorbed, as are other fat soluble substance, by micelle and chylomicron formation. 

Vitamin E is absorbed best in the presence of fat. Conditions that interfere with fat absorption, such as biliary tract diseases, pancreatic insufficiency, and excessive mineral oil ingestion, reduce the amount of vitamin E absorbed.

It is stored largely in adipose largely in adipose tissue, muscle, liver and in somewhat smaller amounts, in heart, uterus, testes, and adrenals.
