HOW HEALTHY ARE WE?

It is quoted – “Health is wealth.”

But how many of us realize this in reality? In the action packed life of today, where people are tend to work like machines, health is easily neglected.

So, the question arises what are we working for if we pay no heed to our own well-being? Merely earning will not help us to lead a successful life, because money can buy everything but not happiness. Our happiness is the reflection of our own health. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “It is health that is the real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. “

It is good to be a workaholic. But being a healthy workaholic will always be better.

But what do we mean by being healthy? The word ‘health’ can have different meanings to different people, depending upon the situations. But basically, health is state of complete physical, mental and social being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Being healthy means proper functioning of a human body. It means staying fit and active.

Health can also be subdivided into two types – Physical and Mental health.

For humans, physical health means a good body health which is the outcome of regular physical activity, rich nutrition and adequate rest.

Physical health is one of the most important aspects of a person’s well being. A person can only continue with his daily routine, when he is physically fit and active. If he is physically unwell it leads to hindrance in his work. Physical health totally depends upon on the food we eat and the physical activities which we perform.
It is said every time you eat or drink you are either feeding disease or fighting it. Therefore it becomes necessary for us to eat food which is rich in vitamins, minerals, calcium, proteins and fat and it is equally necessary that the food should be hygienic and clean, only then it will be beneficial. Getting the right amount of sleep also has a vital role to play in the maintenance of physical health.

Moreover, intake of healthy food should be accompanied by proper physical activities. A person can only be totally healthy if he is active and fit. To be active, he should take help of regular exercise and work out. Fitness reflects a person’s cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition. Exercises and daily workouts enhance the body fitness and provide strength to a person.

Now we come to mental health. It can be referred to people’s cognitive and emotional well being. It can be termed as a state of well being in which a person realizes his abilities to cope up with the normal day to day stresses of life and can work productively in order to contribute towards his society. People have always neglected the assessment of mental health as its assessment is subjective. Mental health can be taken care by performing yoga or by practicing meditation. Mental and physical health both are interrelated terms. They are complementary to each other.

So the motto in life should be “Eat healthy , think good.”
