PACKED CELL VOLUME
DEFINITION
Packed cell volume (PCV)
is the hematocrit value expressed as the percentage of cellular elements with
that of whole blood. This is the volume of red blood cells packed at the bottom
of a hematocrit tube when the blood is centrifuged.
SIGNIFICANCE OF DETERMINING PCV
Determination of PCV helps
in
- Diagnosis and treatment of anemia
- Diagnosis and treatment of polycythemia
- Determination of extent of dehydration and
recovery from dehydration after treatment
- Decision of blood transfusion
NORMAL VALUES OF PCV
The normal PCV is:
In males = 40 to 45%.
In females = 38 to 42%
VARIATIONS IN PCV
PCV increases in
polycythemia and dehydration, decreases in anemia, pregnancy and cirrhosis of
liver.
