Autoregulation of BP: 

This occurs according to the needs of the specific tissue. This is called as Oxygen Demand Theory for local blood flow control. This occurs by several mechanisms:

a. Reactive Hyperemia: 


When the blood supply to a tissue is blocked for a few seconds to several hours and then is unblocked, the flow through the tissue usually increases to four to seven times normal; the increased flow will continue for a few seconds if the block has lasted only a few seconds but sometimes for as long as many hours if the blood flow has been stopped for an hour or more. This phenomenon is called reactive hyperemia. Reactive hyperemia is al­most certainly another manifestation of the local "metabolic" blood flow regulation mechanism; that is, lack of flow sets into motion all of those factors that cause vasodilation.

Various Conditions affecting BP:

A.  Physiological

1.  Age: The BP is affected by age. In the young people BP is usual low and reaches the adult value of 120/80. Thereafter, both the SBP and DBP rise gradually till 40 years. From 40 years onwards the rise is steep, particularly with SBP. At 70 years of age, the BP is normally about 160/90 mm of Hg and 80 it is about 180/95 mm of Hg.

Normal Values Of BP: 

The BP values depend on various physiological parameters like Age, Exercise, Stress, Time of recording etc.

Arterial pressure fluctuates between a systolic level of 120 mm Hg and a diastolic level of 80 mm Hg, Thus a BP of 120/80 is considered as normal. As the blood flows through the systemic circulation, its pressure falls progressively to about 0 mm Hg by the time it reaches the termination of the venae cavae in the right atrium of the heart.

Introduction:

The main function of the circulatory system is to cater the various needs of tissues. The blood which is being continuously pumped by heart reaches various tissues of the body. A pressure gradient is maintained across various parts of the circulatory system which defines the amount and speed of blood flow to particular region.
